Albuquerque City Guide: Top Ways to Spend 3 Days in New Mexico’s Largest City

Albuquerque tends to take a back seat to popular tourist destinations Taos and Santa Fe. But no more! Albuquerque is a unique and vibrant city and has much to offer when planning any trip to New Mexico!

I visited Albuquerque on an epic solo road trip around New Mexico. Some of my favorite stops along the journey were staying in an off-grid Earthship, visiting the Bisti Badlands and White Sands National Park.

These are my favorite finds and things you must do if you’re spending three days in Albuquerque.

Happy traveling!

Where To Stay In Albuquerque

Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm. A historic and gorgeous property, I loved relaxing amidst its 25 acres of lavender fields and gigantic cottonwoods trees. It is located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley and is a model of sustainability. Visit for a delicious handcrafted meal or coffee even if you aren’t staying there.

Things To Do In Albuquerque

Casa Rondena Winery. New Mexico grows some pretty wonderful grapes. You have several wineries to choose from, but be sure to taste the bounty at Casa Rondena. They have beautiful grounds and outdoor tables with which to sip the fresh wine. Pro tip: rent a bike and pedal your way around for a truly magnificent afternoon.

Rio Grande Nature Center State Park. This beautiful state park is where epic bird and wildlife viewing happens. More than 260 species of birds pass through here along the Rio Grande Flyway. Walk the excellent trail system along the river, and enjoy demonstration gardens in a protected area (pets not allowed.)

ABQ BioPark. One of the best places to bring the kids in Albuquerque. With a zoo, a botanical garden, aquarium, and special events held throughout the year, there is something here for literally everyone to enjoy.

Wander the streets of Old Town. You will be utterly charmed by this historic part of Albuquerque. With its plethora of adobe buildings containing art galleries, restaurants, and souvenir shops, it is a gorgeous testament to Native American and Spanish heritage. This is where you will find the city’s oldest structure, the beautiful Church of San Felipe.

Paseo Del Bosque Trail. For a respite from the bustle of the city, (without actually leaving town), hike this trail, which runs through the metro area and is easily accessible by bike or on foot. It will take you on a journey through cottonwood forests and along the scenic Rio Grande River.

Sandia Peak Tramway at Sunset. Take in the grandeur of the setting sun, with a majestic view of the Sandia Mountains as a backdrop. To see this glorious spectacle, take the Sandia Peak Tramway up a whopping 2.7 miles to the summit. Be sure to get there at least a few minutes before sunset, so you have time to grab a drink to toast the day as the sun drops below the horizon.

Where To Eat in Albuquerque

Annapurna’s World Vegetarian Cafe. You don’t have to be strictly vegetarian to enjoy this delicious café. Their tasty and varied menu also offers vegan options, with beautiful dishes and fresh ingredients made by hand and to order. Open for breakfast and lunch.

St James Tearoom. During your day of epic sightseeing, take a small reprieve and relax in this fantastic tearoom. It is a wonderful sanctuary that celebrates all things Irish, with traditional savory Irish meals, bread, and sweets. Journey to the Emerald Isle with your taste buds!
